CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

The subsequent weeks passed in a blur.

Thea was hard at work in her training. Mornings she spent with Reed and the other team members. Afternoons, she went with Niamh to the cavern to practice controlling her emotions. Evenings after eating, she spent in her room blowing up phones until she was too frustrated to bother with it anymore. Despite what she’d said, she could not bring herself to ask Phil for help. She wanted to learn the damn incantation herself. How am I supposed to be the kind of mage who can take on Haiden if I can’t learn to cast spells?

Thea figured she could find help in the Archives, but there were too many damned books. More than once, Iain found her fast asleep with her head on an ancient text, drooling onto the pages. Thea was glad the werewolf had caught her and not her daemon, who would have had her head for handling the tomes with such “careless frivolity.”

Eventually, Thea realized the books at headquarters didn’t have what she needed, and they would not be at home either. She had to find a different library.

She had little time or mental space to give to her socials. She spoke with her mother once a week and thought of her father often. Anwen was improving though nowhere near back to normal. Reed had interrogated the elf prisoner on several occasions. She was trickier to get answers from after her stint with Thea.

Of course, Reed had found out about the incident and made Thea train extra hard for three days straight. Thea had gone to bed each night sorer than the last.

One morning, Phil came into her room with a surprise announcement. “The Inquisitors are meeting today to discuss how they will respond to Haiden’s more recent attacks, and—”

“There have been more?” Thea interrupted, alarmed.

Phil nodded. “Reed wants you in the briefing room.”

Thea had been scrolling through her phone, trying to find the perfect playlist for practicing spellcasting. Her gaze shot to Phil in surprise. “Really?”

“Come along, then.” Phil gave her room a rueful look. He noticed the piles of sand all over the carpet and the mangled phones on Thea’s bed. “What have you been doing in here?”

Thea tossed a blanket over the phones. “Nothing.”

“I know Iain knows. He’s been in here with you.” Phil raised his brow. “You two haven’t been up to anything naughty, have you?”

“Phil!” Thea was horrified. “I can’t believe you would suggest such a thing.”

Phil fluttered a hand in the general direction of her experimentation. “I have to assume things when you don’t tell me! And I wasn’t alluding to anything…romantic. This could be a setup for your online presence, for all I know.”

Thea sighed. “I think I will have to tell you soon anyway.”

“Because you need my help.”

It wasn’t a question, but Thea nodded anyway. “Let’s see what Reed wants first,” she told her daemon.

Phil led her to the briefing room, which was a chamber next to the training courtyard. The large, round table with several seats was similar to Anwen’s meeting room table.
